Older Adults Network educates faith community
Ministers within faith communities are more likely than most to hear about abusive situations, but least likely to refer victims to community services, according to published research.

"That may only be because they're not aware of what services are available in the community, what help can be provided," says Margaret Hawkins of the Older Adults Abuse Prevention Network in Peterborough. "It doesn't necessarily mean that the leader isn't able to help the individual." She adds that ministers and church leaders may also be unaware of constitutes abuse.

The Network has decided to include the Peterborough faith community in its current education campaign around abuse. Network members are asking various churches in the area to seriously consider implementing an educational tool on abuse of all kinds, not just elder abuse.

The tool, called "Fire in the Rose," assists churches in exploring abuse and healing. It's a 16-week program, includes videos and booklets, and focuses on the nature and consequences of abuse.

The program is designed to help participants reflect on their own attitudes, feelings and experiences around abuse, examine the roots of abuse and violence, and identify the tools and skills for new ways of living together.

The program is also designed to help churches create and strengthen ministries of healing and prevention. "Fire in the Rose" was developed in collaboration with 18 local churches across Canada.

"Our goal is to bring this program to many more churches," says Margaret. "At this point we have one church that's seriously looking at it."

The Older Adults Abuse Prevention Network has received two years of Trillium funding to focus on preventing abuse through education and the development of a co-ordinated community response.

The Network meets once a month and always welcomes new members, particularly older adults. Anyone interested in becoming a member may contact Ann McLeod at 705-743-1000.
