New family violence prevention publications available

Health Canada has just released seven new family violence prevention publications. Both victims and abusers across Canada can make use of these publications. Most of them are directories that list the services available for people involved with family violence.

Transition Houses and Shelters for Abused Women in Canada 2002, one of the directories, provides a current listing of 466 services and programs in Canada that are geared to meeting the needs of abused women.

Each listing identifies the type of facility or service and indicates whether bilingual services are available, whether there is a fee for the services, whether women with special needs can be accommodated, and whether children can be accommodated.

Canada's Treatment Programs for Men Who Abuse Their Partners 2002, another one of the directories, provides a listing of treatment programs for men who abuse their partners. Many of the 186 programs use multiple approaches such as individual counseling, support groups and anger management workshops. The directory notes that waiting lists are fairly common when seeking treatment for violent tendencies.
