Brochure
teaches youth about healthy relationships A locally produced brochure designed to educate youth about healthy relationships is still being distributed through Peterborough agencies and institutions, and will soon be available across the province. Last year, 55,000 copies of the Are You Cool? brochure were made and distributed to various agencies, to a local independent school and to all students in Grades 7 through OAC in the two local school boards. "The kids really love it," says the YWCA's Janice Wuerch. "We designed it here at the Y and then a fantastic artist at the Commercial Press jazzed it up for us. It's on glossy black paper with lots of graphics; it has teen appeal." Having teen appeal is the first step in getting teens to hear the brochure's message, says Janice. Their interest piqued, teens will read the contents to discover, by answering a series of questions, whether their relationships are healthy, hurtful or unhealthy. "The neat thing about this brochure is that the information is relevant not only to teens but to people of all ages," says Janice. "And it's written totally generically, so it's relevant to all kinds of relationships." Included in the brochure are tips for safer dating and information about where to get help if needed. The YWCA has received funding to partner with other communities in distributing Are You Cool? provincially. Are You Cool? was produced through a partnership among the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board, the YWCA of Peterborough Victoria and Haliburton, and Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Services. Copies of the brochure may be obtained by contacting the YWCA at 705-743-3526. |
