Peaceful Communities Forum
Web site now online "We need to learn and teach skills and values that create the sort of community where no one resorts to violence as a way of getting what they want," states Lynn Zimmer, Chair of the Peaceful Communities Steering Committee. Workshops will be offered with leading experts in violence prevention, social change and law and justice from across North America. The forum will wind along two main strands. The first strand, Sharing of skills and use of tools, includes mediation, training in empathy and the building of respect, as well as anger management, social marketing and behavioural change. The second strand, Development of programs, includes fostering non-violent behaviour in children, understanding equity and diversity, dealing with violence and abuse in the workplace and school and exploring restorative justice. Each will be discussed in the context of personal and collective safety plans in both urban and rural settings. The Peaceful Communities Coalition, the forum's organizer, is a community partnership that has been engaged in a project to gather research on violence and violence prevention initiatives in Peterborough County. The data from this research will be presented at the forum. Organizers also intend the forum to generate hopefulness and creativity around violence prevention and to highlight positive examples of programs locally and in other communities. The Peaceful Communities forum will be held on Wednesday, Oct 23 and Thursday, Oct 24, during the Week Without Violence. It is open to anyone who is interested. |
