Wilderness adventure
to help with healing

Outward Bound Canada developed a unique program in 1988. Focussed on providing women survivors of violence with an opportunity to challenge themselves and increase their sense of strength and integrity, the progam is centred around a multi-day wilderness canoe trip.

To date more than 900 women have successfully completed this course, which is called "Women of Courage". Participants have ranged in age from 20 to 55+ and have come from every walk of life. Instructors are experts in wilderness travel and group facilitation.

Comments from participants sound like this: "… we will remember this as the childhood we never had. We will laugh again and be whole again, and in time we will be the person we have always been inside," and "I had an opportunity to meet many other women and to grow in many ways. I learned of some of the strengths I have that I didn't even realize existed."

Any woman who has completed, or is nearing completion of, a group or individual counseling program is eligible for "Women of Courage". Likewise, any alternative process, such as a Native Healing Circle, translates into eligibility. The course is geared to women who "are involved in the process of healing that follows the self-acknowledgement of an experience of abuse. This could include sexual, physical or mental abuse, perpetrated by any individual, male, female or group, and experienced at any time during the woman's life."

The paddling program involves a five-day canoe expedition, sleeping in tents, cooking nutritious meals over camp stoves or wood fires, a day of rock climbing and a special solo day for self-reflection.

Applications are still being accepted for the "Women of Courage" courses running in September, 2002. Two September sessions are offered, September 7 - 14 and September 15 - 22. A course is offered from August 3 - 11 for deaf women.
