'We were kids… Now
we're not'

Peterborough youth publish
handbook on abuse

You know, there are some projects that begin and end rather quietly. And others simply take off. It's as if they take on a life of their own. A group of Peterborough high-school students have found themselves at the centre of such a project.

The students are getting ready to print the next round of their homegrown book, We were kids… now we're not. The book is geared towards teenagers, and covers a range of topics around abuse within relationships.

"Keep these things in mind…" states one of the final chapters. "Our society has a responsibility to stop all forms of sexual assault and violence - this means you! Learning more about why it happens and challenging myths is a good first step.

The book is packed with calls to action, facts about abuse, quizzes, poetry, drawings, tips on what to do if you experience abuse, and community resources.

"I don't know if they thought it would really happen," says Jennifer Laevens. Jennifer helped facilitate the Project Against Violence by Youth, through the YWCA.

"A lot of them have had lifestyles that had some line of abuse weaved into it somehow," says Jennifer. "And they wanted to do something that was very creative. They wanted to be able to do something collectively."

Jennifer says the result was very well received. "Everybody loves the book, and they want to do more."

With Jennifer's help, the group met each week, over a period of three and a half months, to discuss the issues of violence, write, chat, do research and hang out with one another.

So far about 300 copies have been printed, and the group is hoping to print more. Books are available through the YWCA and the high schools. If you would like a copy, contact the YWCA at 705-743-3526.
