Building
community through Second Steps workshop One of the most effective ways to build a peaceful community is by getting to children early. Educators have been saying this for years and now community partners are inclined to agree. Second Steps: Building A Peaceful Community, was one of those workshops that wants to get to kids while the idea of character is still forming - while the idea of what it is to be human and respectful is still somewhat unformed. Marilyn Foster and Michelle Erridge were promoting the Second Steps program at the two-day Peaceful Communities forum, held at Sir Sandford Fleming College on Wednesday and Thursday. This award-winning program helps children manage their emotions and respond appropriately in difficult situations. It allows them to stand up for themselves against behaviours they do not like. "The workshop went very well, it was very busy," says Foster. Foster notes that the beauty of this program is that it can be fit into the existing curriculum. "It can fit in almost anywhere - language, arts, book reports - wherever there is a logical place" for its applications, says Foster. The program was designed by The Committee For Children, which was sponsored by the Trillium Foundation. As for where and when the program operates for children in the school system, Foster says it is "being implemented now." "A number of schools have the kits," she notes, which can be used from pre-school right up to Grade 8. If anyone would like the kit, they can contact the Five Counties Children's Centre in Peterborough, or call Foster at the Trent Child Care Centre at (705) 743-2811. |
