Vigil for Peace starts tonight

A Vigil for Peace will be held from midnight, September 10, to midnight, September 11 at Confederation Park in Peterborough.

"This will be a place to go to just to think peaceful thoughts," says Margaret Slavin, one of the organizers of the vigil.

It will also be a place and time to share those thoughts on peace. People are invited to come and bring whatever they want to offer for remembering the events of September 11, 2001 and also for thinking further about world peace and non-violence.

The hope is that the vigil will begin the process towards a more peaceful way forward. "If people will look about them when they're on this vigil, and notice other people and perhaps talk with them and get to know them, it's going to be a wonderful opportunity for us to become more directly aware of the diversity of our community," says Margaret. She is expecting a wide range of perspectives to be represented at the vigil.

"There will be people such as Friends of Afghanistan and the Muslim Student Association, and people, like myself, who are very concerned about the sanctions against Iraq," says Margaret. "And that's fine. I just think it's really exciting that there will be a place to go to just think peaceful thoughts."

Community support for the vigil has been overwhelming, with over 30 organizations endorsing it. "There's this longing for a more peaceful way forward," says Margaret.

A core group will take turns throughout the day holding "peaceful prayers and peaceful meditations for a non-violent resolution to conflict."

Several community-members are scheduled to join the vigil at particular points throughout the day.

Mayor Sylvia Sutherland will join the vigil at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon.

A local band, called Raging Grannies, will be there from 2-4 p.m.

Firemen from the Peterborough Fire Department will be coming by at 3 p.m..

A native elder will conduct a tobacco ceremony for peace at 7 in the evening.

Representatives from several faith communities will also be there throughout the day.

Individuals are invited to bring candles in the evening, and to stay for as long as they wish.

An information table will be available for people to bring written material for distribution.
