Change 'the person within' to get a start on peace: student

A Peterborough college student says you have to change "the person within" in order to create a peaceful community.

Emma Davies says everyone has the power to make a difference in their community by simply changing the way they approach their daily lives. The first-year Corrections student at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough recently made a promise through the Peterborough Peace Builder Campaign.

The campaign calls on residents to make a promise of action to reduce violence and build a stronger community, encouraging others to do the same. The news site has been focused on people who are making a difference in their homes and in their neighbourhoods to show the power of individual action.

"It's really about little things," says Emma. "It's about watching your own behaviour and modelling" for others.

Emma heard about the campaign through her teacher at school. In fact, it was made a part of their assignment, worth five per cent of their total mark, to fill out a submission form and commit to a promise of action.

Emma says the campaign has made her "think in a different way."

"When I thought of peace before, it sounded like something on a world level. But it's really not. It's just about living your life well and encouraging this from others," she says.

Emma says the campaign has inspired her to send the link around, including to her mother. "I think this is a good example of what we can all do when we work on ourselves and then work together," Emma says.

"It's really something each of us can work on."
