Peace Builder Promise
Student promises to help reduce hunger

Some students at Sir Sandford Fleming College do not have enough to eat, says a student who promised to help do something about it.

As part of the Peace Builder Campaign, Richard Nye promised to “share the harvest,” and he’s already done so by participating in a recent food drive to help support students at the college.

“A lot of people don’t have a lot of food here. It’s something you really notice here,” says Richard, noting that many of his friends and his roommates are often short on food.

It costs a lot to attend college, he says, not to mention the cost of necessities such as text books. There’s not much left over to buy food, he explains.

“I have a job, and a lot of people here don’t. I have more money than others, so I felt (giving away food) was something I could do to help.”

“It’s all about sharing,” he adds.

Richard’s promise was: “Share the harvest. Take some food from your garden and give it to a neighbour who is alone or in need.”

In other words, explains Richard, sharing food is something that everyone should do, if they can. Lack of food extends far beyond the college campus, into everyone’s community, he notes.

The Peace Builder Campaign calls on residents to make a promise of action to reduce violence and build a better community. Over the past three months, more than 65 Peace Builder promises have been made, and more are continuing to pour in.
