Peace Builder Promise Aja is bringing together all those beliefs and taking action on them through her Peace Builder Promise: “I promise to offer to volunteer for Kinark Child and Family Services to provide support and companionship for a child with emotional, behavioural and social problems.” “Contributing to the happiness and well-being of a child and a family within my community is a sure-fire way to build the spirit of a peaceful community,” notes Aja. Indeed, by volunteering to work as a Special Friend to children with special needs, Aja is seeking to accomplish several peace-building initiatives. She will be giving the gift of time to a worthy organization, enriching the lives of children and providing respite for their families. And on top of all that, she hopes to spark an enthusiasm for peace building in young people. “My peace builder promise is important to me because I want to inspire children in our community to become peace builders as well. What better way to achieve this than to spend time helping to enrich the life of a child who may have behavioural and emotional problems?” says Aja. Essentially, her job experiences motivated her to make her peace builder promise. “I work with volunteers every day and know the value of giving one's time,” says Aja. She works as the home support services co-ordinator for Community Care Peterborough, a non-profit charitable organization that provides volunteer-based support services to seniors and adults with physical challenges. “I recently attended the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for the Peterborough area and I thought that if the volunteers represented there could take a few hours out of their busy week to serve others, than I could certainly do the same. Imagine the things our community could accomplish if each person gave the gift of time,” she says. As a Special Friend, Aja will spend time with a child, which offers respite for their family. “Ultimately, the couple of hours a week that I spend with a child will help maintain the health of their family and hopefully enable the child to develop new relationships and build self-esteem.” At this point, she has applied for the volunteer position and an interview has been arranged. “Kinark has a rigorous screening process to ensure that suitable individuals are chosen to match with each family, so it will take some time before I am actually (volunteering),” says Aja. |
