Peace Builder Promise
Medical Officer of Health pledges to boost violence awareness

Peterborough is considered a friendly, close-knit community, but unfortunately, it is not immune to violence, says Dr. Garry Humphreys, Medical Officer of Health for the Peterborough County-City Health Unit.

“We all like to feel our community is safe, but unfortunately there are issues like violence. There is a challenge in this – our levels of violence may be less than in other areas, but we still need to continue awareness. We don’t want even one case of violence in our community.”

Through the Peace Builder Campaign, Dr. Humphreys has made a promise “to become even more committed at the health unit to increase awareness of violence in our community.”

The campaign, which coincides with the YWCA’s Month Without Violence, calls on residents to make a promise of action to reduce violence and build a better community.

“Violence is a public health issue,” says Dr. Humphreys.

A key role of the health unit is to educate the public, so, to carry out his promise, he and the health unit staff will “educate about the harmful effects of family violence on young children,” as well as violence in marriages, elder abuse, verbal abuse, and other forms of violence.

“There are so many facets to it,” he says.

Health unit staff will raise awareness and educate the public through such initiatives as parenting programs, family home visits, the Healthy Babies/Healthy Children program, and the pediatric clinic, to name a few, says Dr. Humphreys.
