Kaos Radio, public school board team up for character
School bus drivers and riders promote good character

A partnership between the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough's newest radio station - Kaos, 99.5 - seems to be built on good character.

That's what happens when the focus is character education, one of the defining signatures of the public school board and a value the radio station embraces.

"We want to promote good character in kids, and youth is the age bracket we're targeting," explains Lexi Cameron, news director of Kaos.

In the partnership, school bus drivers and school bus riders can nominate each other for good character. Drivers can nominate kids, explains Cameron, while kids can nominate drivers.

Once a week a draw will be held for the youth for prizes worth up to $100. For drivers, a draw will be once a month. If a driver wins, he or she will win a free breakfast at a local participating restaurant with the entire busload of kids.

"It's part of our core values," says Cameron of the character focus.

As well, Kaos aims to target diversity in youth, expose Peterborough's young people to local youth agencies and partner with local and national youth institutions.

The new radio station was launched Nov. 25, a small station that reaches the Greater Peterborough Area. With its youth focus, at least one student from every city high school is expected to provide regular newscasts about school activities.

Kaos plays a mix of music, although it has a Christian licence.

The school board's character education program is based on co-operation and collaboration with a wide cross-section of the community.

Its program focuses in a systematic and intentional manner 10 character attributes amongst students and staff. These attributes are: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Integrity, Empathy, Fairness, Initiative, Perseverance, Courage, and Optimism.
