Follow the Yellow Bike road

Jessie Kepchum is an avid bicyclist who plans to paint Peterborough yellow. Hired as summer co-ordinator of the city's Yellow Bike program two weeks ago, Jessie was getting ready to paint part of a bike stand yellow at the city bus station when interviewed yesterday by Peaceful Communities.

Jessie will be spending the summer promoting the program, fixing bicycles and recruiting volunteers to help collect donated bikes and bike maintenance.

She is looking for more volunteers to work at fixing up bicycles at the Yellow Bike shop at Stratton House, 740 Water St. Mondays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m.

"I love biking and I love this program," says Jessie, a Trent University student who worked as a bike courier in Ottawa. "I don't even have a driver's licence."

The program which was launched in 2003 promotes the idea of clean, safe and friendly transportation available for all. While the program has had a problem in the past with some yellow bikes thrown into ditches, overall it has been "reasonably successful," Jessie says.

About 80 people have bought memberships so far, she says. "It's an environmentally friendly program and there are awesome biking possibilities in Peterborough," Jessie says.

Anyone can buy a membership in the Yellow Bike program for $10 which entitles them to a universal key that opens all yellow bikes in the system. You can pick up and leave bicycles at stands in several locations including Millennium Park, Hilliard and George streets, McDonnel and Park streets, Del Crary Park or Trent University.

You can buy a membership at Wild Rock Outfitters on Charlotte Street or Peterborough Green-Up in Peterborough Square. To find out more about the program or to volunteer, call 755-8844.
