DBIA head says businesses looked out for each other in difficult time
Mayor thanks citizens for their ‘resiliency’

Corry Vanderkooy, owner of Pammett’s Flowers, was dismayed when she heard a competitor’s refrigeration system had gone down right before her business rival had a wedding to do. With the flood having such a devastating effect across the city, Corry didn’t hesitate to open her own cooler’s doors to her competitor’s flowers.

"There’s room for us all" in this city, Corry tells peacefulcommunities.ca

"Our cooler had gone down, too, but it came back on earlier and I felt blessed by that," she says.

When Corry spoke to the owner of the other flower shop, she says they had a nice chat and shared their woes together.

As fate would have it, the very next day Corry needed help when a wholesaler couldn’t get into Peterborough because the highway was closed leading into the city. But when Corry called Griffin’s Greenhouses in Lakefield, they quickly agreed to hold her order until she could come and get it herself.

"It’s amazing what we can all do for one another," she says.

Walter Johnstone, head of the DBIA in Peterborough, says there is no doubt businesses have been exemplary during a trying time.

"The businesses that have rebounded the fastest are the ones who have the best network of family, friends and others helping them out," he says.

He points out that Peterborough Square has a surplus of space and made it available to those who were most in need.

Walter says another example of business stepping up to the plate is AON, the largest developer in Peterborough. "They responded quickly to the needs of their tenants," he says.

"If their tenants are having difficulty with their insurance companies, AON is intervening on their behalf," says Walter.

"They’re (AON) helping to clear through some complexities quickly" to get people on their feet again, he says.

At a recent council meeting, Mayor Sylvia Sutherland had high praise for "all those who offered help during this crisis."

"I have seldom been prouder of the city and its people during my 13 years as mayor," Sutherland said. "I want to thank people for their courage, resiliency and determination."
