Adams says bill will see
one million students vote
Health and economic development top MP’s agenda for election
Wednesday, June 2, 2004
When he introduced a private member's motion in the House of Commons earlier
this year to get young people engaged in voting, MP Peter Adams wasn’t
sure how far-reaching it would be.
But the motion, passed unanimously, is guiding Elections
Canada to work actively with groups that are directly connected with children.
In the end, says Adams, now more than one million students will be voting
coast to coast to coincide with the upcoming federal election, a democratic
exercise to get them interested in politics early.
"It appears to be working very well," Peter
tells peacefulcommunities.ca by cell phone during a campaign stop in Norwood.
"My motion to direct Elections Canada to work with young people this
way" will have an impact, he says, in response to questions about
civic engagement for young people.
Adams' parliamentary motion directs Elections Canada
to work with groups like Scouts and Guides Canada, Student Vote 2004,
teachers, service clubs and others to encourage voter participation among
young Canadians.
Peter says his only regret is that students will not
be able to vote exactly on election day, but rather during that week,
with results posted directly after the main election is decided upon.
For the Peterborough area, The MP says rural and urban
health care tops his election agenda, particularly implementing the key
components of the Romanow Commission.
Rural economic development is another key issue for
Peter, in order to create a sustainable base for the county. "It
needs special attention," says the MP, citing such initiatives as
getting broadband Internet access for rural areas of the county, for parity
with city dwellers.
Thirdly, Peter says dealing with BSE (Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease) is crucial for the area.
