Crestwood, Holy Cross go minority
red in early mock election
Friday, June 11, 2004 - Roderick Benns
Student Vote 2004 was held at Crestwood Secondary School and Holy Cross
Secondary School in Peterborough recently, with the outcome very much
similar in each – a minority Liberal government.
At Crestwood, the Liberals had 170 votes, the Conservatives
133 and the NDP 111. However, the category Other garnered 162 votes, becoming
the official opposition.
At Holy Cross, the Liberals garnered 152 votes, the
Conservatives 116, the NDP 104 and the Green Party 97. At Holy Cross,
students were instructed to cross off the word ‘Other’ and
replace it with Green Party because, locally, Green Party candidate Brent
Wood was on the real ballot. At the time, there were just four candidates.
At Crestwood, 576 students voted while at Holy Cross
577 students cast ballots.
Linda Gendron, civics teacher at Holy Cross, says the
fact the election was held so close to the summer was really difficult
for schools to manage, given June is so busy. Citing provincial testing,
proms, exams and athletic commitments, she says Student Vote 2003 was
much better received by both students and teachers.
"The sad thing is, because we didn’t get
going until the election was called, the momentum wasn’t there.
In 2003, there was lots more momentum," she says, referencing the
provincial election student vote.
Linda, who also teaches history and geography, says
she believes the elections are a good exercise. "There was a lot
of dialogue, a lot of individual engagement," adds Linda, noting
many students approached her and other teachers to discuss their feelings
about the election in between classes and before and after school.
Peterborough area schools – 11 in total –
have registered to vote. Nation-wide results for all Canadian schools
will be announced after polls close on election day.
