Green Party candidate says he has no trouble sharing his message
Wood part of Green’s shadow cabinet
Green Party candidate Brent Wood says the broadcast consortium's decision to exclude the party from the televised national debate is a decision that shows how far behind the networks are compared to the people of Canada.

Brent, Peterborough’s candidate, says the lack of respect the party has received by the networks is actually translating into increased media attention.

"It says more about the state of the media networks," he says.

"The people are missing out and I think that’s a loss. It’s unfortunate we don’t get coverage in the same way (the debates) but it’s coming in different ways," he says.

Brent says locally he isn’t having any trouble getting his message out, and neither is Green Party leader, Jim Harris.

"We’re not the kind of party to rely on a TV spectacle. Next time around, though, I do think we will see the party included," even if the party fails to win a seat in parliament. The Green Party is considered extremely competitive in at least two ridings in Canada, both in British Columbia.

One thing giving Brent more increased exposure is his role as Human Resources and Social Development critic, a shadow cabinet position. "It’s worked out really well," says Brent, "because around here housing and health are the big issues."

Brent has made contact with the Social Planning Council and the Housing Development Corporation in the city to discuss their concerns. Part of his role as the critic in this portfolio, he says, is to come up with more detailed policy ideas to expand upon the Green Party platform.

Brent says in this new role he participated in a national radio program recently based out of Calgary to talk about housing and social development.

Green Party Leader, Jim Harris, will be coming to Peterborough today. He’s meeting with community members at the Grassroots Cafe, Aylmer and Hunter streets, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event is open to everyone.
