Peaceful Political Profile: Linda Slavin, NDP

Slavin says look to community for solutions
A three-time runner for the New Democratic Party in Peterborough is turning her sights federally again, hoping to win office and help implement social and economic change.

Linda Slavin, well-known in social and economic justice circles, says she has what it takes to join federal NDP leader Jack Layton in Ottawa. In 1984, Linda contested the federal election for the NDP, and in 1985 and 1987 she ran provincially for the party.

The NDP veteran just spent seven years as a member of OPSEU at Trent University. She
managed a $6.5-million environmental rehabilitation project in Mexico and Ecuador. She says she has been working on the issues of environmental sustainability, peace and development, and economic and social justice for more than 30 years.

When it comes to civic engagement, Linda says she fully supports the NDP position of proportional representation. "I sense a lot of alienation out there. People need to be given a way for their vote to count," she notes, "and we're (Canada) behind the times."

Linda is also becoming a member of Fair Vote Canada, a lobby group dedicated to getting Canada's antiquated voting system changed. She also likes the Vote Canada program in area schools, which encourages electoral participation and interest at a young age.

Philosophically, the NDP candidate says there is "a greater need to look to our own community for solutions," saying they are there to be found.

Linda says the area needs a meaningful exchange of ideas through a "citizens' forum" on a regular basis. "Peterborough is a town where people act on their interests, and that's why it would succeed," says Linda.

"Constituent assemblies work in many places around the world," she notes.

Linda says other important issues for the Peterborough area are child poverty and people on low income who are unable to make ends meet. "People are hungry in
this town in one of the richest nations on Earth."

Other things Linda says need to change:
rent costs are too high
$10 an hour for minimum wage is needed
Ontario Disability Support Program rates should be increased
The rate for people on Ontario Works should be increased

Linda received her B.A. from the University of Toronto, and graduated from the Ontario College of Education.
