Candidate says voter turnout hampered by focus
on elite
Monday, May 31, 2004
Stephan Crouter, candidate for the Canadian ACTION Party in the Peterborough
riding, says a prevailing focus on the elite and the upper class in the
region has harmed voter turnout.
He says young people "just don't care anymore,
and with good reason."
"What have politicians given to the young people
in this city -- for the most part, nothing," he says.
"It seems that the focus is on the business elite
and the upper class. Although some focus should be on them, I believe,
as does the Canadian ACTION Party, that all citizens of Canada should
have an equal say."
On the other hand, he notes, all is not as bad "as
the media would make it seem" regarding younger people and their
involvement in the community. "Many young people from all walks of
life are engaging the issues, working with the elderly, and striving to
make a contribution to society. Young people must be recognized for the
work they do, regardless of their age, or voting status."
The Canadian ACTION Party has been around since 1997.
According to their website, they are a "pro-Canadian party, dedicated
to the principle that Canada can best serve its citizens and the world
by re-claiming and maintaining its sovereignty as an independent country.
(The party) is opposed to the rise of 'corporate rule' and those aspects
of unrestricted global investment that promote the re-colonization of
the world’s smaller powers — and Canada’s absorption
by the United States of America."
Stephan says one of the key issues in the campaign
is accountability. "If elected, my staff will be instructed to provide
any and all information requested by the public, provided it is permissible
under law."
He also cites defence as a major concern. "The
Canadian military is a joke. Our defence budget must be increased by $8
billion over the next five years. We cannot defend Toronto, much less
Canada," says Stephan.
Stephan believes another top issue for federal candidates
to focus on is care for senior citizens. "The care our senior citizens
receive is horrible. They deserve much more respect than they receive.
I believe in setting up a commission in Peterborough to investigate the
situation in our nursing homes, and to fix the situation as may be necessary."
