Fleming’s new tech
wing one of most energy-efficient buildings in Canada
College reinforces reputation for environmental conservation

It ain’t easy being green, as a well-known amphibian likes
to say, but Sir Sandford Fleming College is determined to practise
what it preaches.
The college’s School of Natural Resources
is based in Lindsay and has always been one of the leading schools
in North America for resource management and environmental conservation.
Now, with the unveiling of its new $10.2-million
environmental technology wing, Fleming has upped the ante.
The new wing boasts a number of significant
energy-efficiency and renewable-energy design features, including
a high-performance building envelope and lighting system and ground
source heat pumps to heat and cool the space.
The building was designed to perform at 66 per
cent above the requirements of the Model National Energy Code
for Buildings, making it one of the most energy-efficient building
designs in Canada, ranking third overall.
The 42,000 square foot wing was a special achievement,
according to Communications Officer Pauline Janitch.
"One of the things in the design that was
important was not to just have it environmentally sound, but to
also have a building students could learn from," says Janitch.
For instance, the building has an extensive
ground heat system and a wind turbine for power generation. This
treats the building’s waste water with a series of constructed
wetlands located in the courtyard of the campus, something students
can learn about, hands-on.
The new building will also have a green roof
that will serve as a research platform for developing green roof
technology.
The college received $60,000 toward the design
of this energy-efficient building through Natural Resources Canada's
Commercial Building Incentive Program. This is the third project
for Sir Sandford Fleming College that has qualified for such a
grant.
The applied computing and engineering science
building on the Peterborough campus and the Haliburton campus
building were the two other projects that received funding.
