Postcards aimed at ending violence against
women
Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - Roderick
Benns
Fifteen years ago, while classes
were in session at the École Polytechnique in Montreal,
14 women were murdered by Marc Lepine. It was one of the most
infamous mass murders in modern Canadian history.
That’s why the Canadian Labour Congress
is demanding the federal government take action on 15 different
fronts, in order to make a difference in the struggle to end the
violence. A postcard campaign has been developed which outlines
actions that can be taken. Fifteen postcards have been designed,
each portraying a rose from bud to full bloom, each including
a separate demand.
Yesterday, the women's events committee of the
Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre met to stage a ‘sign-in’
for the community, where postcards were signed and collected to
send to Prime Minister Paul Martin. The cards are to be mailed
one at a time, with each demand spread out.
"I think we have to raise this awareness,
first and foremost," says Heather Karkheck, public education
and events co-ordinator for the centre.
"This is still an issue and we have to
let government know there are things that can be done," to
help, she says. The postcards emphasize such things as childcare,
equality, adequate welfare rates and workplace safety, among other
areas.
There will be three topic areas at the Dec.
6 memorial, to be held at Sadlier House, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. At
least one person will speak about the massacre itself while someone
else will speak about the 21 women who have been killed by their
male partners in the last year in Ontario.
As well, the Stolen Sisters project will be
highlighted, which talks about the challenges faced by aboriginal
women who have family members go missing or those who face violence.
"I think the postcard campaign takes action
– it’s a proactive approach that can be effective,"
says Heather.
