International Elder Abuse
Day tomorrow
Light a candle in tribute to older person, says public
health nurse
Monday, October 18, 2004 - Roderick
Benns
Tomorrow is Elder Abuse Day, at a provincial, national
and international level, unified for the very first time, according
to Public Health Nurse, Ann McLeod.
Ann, with the Peterborough County City Health
Unit, says the day is a great time to continue to raise awareness
for the prevention of abuse of older adults in the county and
beyond.
"We hope to create an environment of peace
and respect, especially on this day," says Ann.
Ann says this year they want to suggest a symbolic
gesture to help illustrate the importance of older adults to society.
"We’re encouraging everyone to light
a candle out of respect for older adults. Perhaps it is something
they could do with their evening meal, or even have an electric
light in a window," Ann says.
In honour of the special day, Ann says they
are also suggesting that everyone should do something nice for
an older person that day. This might involve taking someone out
to dinner, making a phone call to chat for a while or anything
that will show an older person how much they are valued, she explains.
"We’ve done a lot of publicity on
older adult abuse, and I think most seniors in Peterborough are
quite educated on this issue. But we have to be vigilant,"
she says.
An all-day display will be held at Lansdowne
Street Mall tomorrow for Elder Abuse Day, with information materials
available. Guest speakers were also expected at posting time.
