New site to build on
peacefulcommunities.ca
Site needs to drive change agenda
Friday, October 29, 2004 - Roderick Benns
A new online concept is being built to build on the success of
peacefulcommunties.ca. The funding for the innovative news site
ended months ago from the Ministry of Citizenship of Ontario.
However, the private sector partner, Axiom News,
has maintained the site for the last few months because it "is
a community asset that (has) been built, and has a great deal
more potential for energizing change than what we've tapped"
so far, says Axiom’s Executive Editor, Peter Pula.
The main purpose of peacefulcommunities.ca was
to increase the support for volunteer-based organizations working
towards violence prevention in the community, and to enhance the
community's approach to violence prevention by sharing success
stories, best practices and resources.
Pula says taking on a new project that will
serve the community is a way to make a difference.
"If we can get to a more intimate understanding
of what community partners want to accomplish and provide ways
to get them done, we'll all be successful," says Pula.
"It will also take the support of the original
Peaceful Communities network and other interested community organizations.
They can help by being our first customers, helping us network,
supplying content, connecting us with volunteers," he adds.
The original network was anchored by the YWCA
of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton, The Peterborough Social
Planning Council and Community Counselling and Resource Centre,
as well as Axiom News, all partners in the project. But other
community organizations played supplementary roles, too.
Pula says it is still under discussion, as to
what the new site might look like. "We will be trying to
build an online concept striking the right balance between focus
and inclusion. We have to expand our range without losing the
original mandate and audience we've already attracted," he
explains.
Pula says Axiom will attempt to build a news
site to drive the change agendas of several networks at the same
time, combining resources and integrating efforts.
"My hope is that we would use the site
in the community for capacity in supporting youth, environment,
the arts, and downtown vitalization, as well as violence prevention.
Then, by amplifying what works, energize new activity."
For Lynn Zimmer, executive director of the YWCA
of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton, she says it will be
important to articulate in the coming weeks what could be advanced
with an updated mission for a news site.
"We would be looking for creative ways
and creative solutions to make this sustainable. We don’t
want the concept (of peacefulcommunities.ca) to be shelved,"
says Zimmer.
Zimmer says the community partners have recommended
there be more of an entrepreneurial approach. "I think it
needs, at this stage, a private-sector approach to do well, and
I think that’s where Axiom comes in," she says.
