Owning building would allow Green-Up to demonstrate green values: ED

Peterborough Green-Up is getting set to make a mini move within Peterborough Square but the organization’s executive director, Sue McGregor-Hunter, says ideally the local environmental organization would own its own building.

The non-profit group is being compelled to move from its existing location, just inside the George Street doors to the mall on the lower level, because the rent is increasing dramatically. Instead, Green-Up will occupy the space where the Peterborough Family Resource Centre was, around the corner, where it is more affordable. Like at Green-Up's current space, the organization doesn't have a lease and could be moved around again. The group should be in the new space by the end of the month.

Sue says while Green-Up is not homeless, it would be nice for the organization to have its own building so it could demonstrate green values more easily than in a mall setting.

"A demonstration home would allow us to maybe do a solar wall demonstration, as an example," she says.

As well, waste efficiencies or other energy efficiencies could also be demonstrated.

Green-Up has Ecology Park as an outdoor demonstration area.

The green organization has already fielded some calls from other organizations offering to share space with Green-Up, something the group is considering for the future, says Sue.

Sue points out the mall location has been helpful in attracting walk-in traffic, and people are especially interested in the information Green-Up has on managing mold, given the number of homes affected by recent severe flooding.

"For now, we have a place to be, and there are certain benefits. But we’ll keep an eye out for future" buildings, partners or both, says Sue.
