On-board surveyors from
Fleming to question transit users
Information to be used to make changes
to Peterborough Transit
Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - Roderick
Benns
When you get on a city bus next month, don’t be surprised
to find someone on board who might have a few questions for you.
That’s the next step in the City of Peterborough’s
quest to make improvements to its transit system – to poll
riders on their transit habits and needs and to solicit their
ideas.
Susan Sauve, the City’s transportation
demand management planner, says a group of Sir Sandford Fleming
College students will be taking on this challenge, starting sometime
in late September or October.
"We’re not sure yet whether they
will be questioning transit users directly or just asking them
to fill something out to be handed back in before the end of their
ride," says Susan, who says they will do some test marketing
on this first.
This follows workshops that were held at the
end of June, considered part of a recent transit review. The City
of Peterborough has been undergoing an overall operations review
this year.
As well, Susan says calls will soon be made
to a large sample of non-transit users in Peterborough to glean
their views on the transit system. All of this consulting is designed
to get recommendations and input for changes to the system, she
says.
A new bus route has already been added for the
fall that leads to Trent University, paid for by the university
as well. It runs on the east side of the Otonabee River, along
Armour Road. New city routes may be part of the changes seen after
the surveys and reviews are complete.
Once the information is gathered, everything
to date will be presented and open for discussion again before
a firm plan arrives in front of council. Council will then decide
upon the recommendations.
