Green-Up shuts doors
for one week to make its move

You may have a question about gardening without pesticides
or some other environmental concern, but if it’s directed
to Peterborough Green-Up you might have to wait on that answer
for about a week.
The go-to organization in Peterborough for environmental
questions or concerns is moving and needs to close its doors to
make it happen, even though they’re not moving far.
Located in the Peterborough Square downtown,
Green-Up is moving further down the hall to set up yet another,
new, temporary home on the lower level of the mall. It will open
its doors again for business at 8:30 am on Monday, September 27.
The move and set up of Green-Up’s Resource
Centre and office space is expected to take some time and will
see the organization closed for the week of September 20 to 24.
"We hope that it doesn’t cause any
inconvenience," says Green-Up’s Executive Director,
Sue McGregor-Hunter.
"But we are taking steps to make sure people
can still contact us if need be," she adds.
Green-Up staff will be checking e-mail and voice
mail throughout the week in order to ensure people can still contact
the organization. Those needing to contact Green-Up can leave
or send a message.
The new office space is formerly the site of
the Peterborough Family Resource Centre. It’s expected to
give both Green-Up staff and patrons a bit more room for maneuvering.
"With the number of environmental programs
Green-Up offers constantly expanding, it was getting to be a tight
squeeze housing both staff and the Resource Centre in our present
location," explains Sue.
Staff should not be expected to get too comfortable
in the new place, however, as Green-Up has access to the space
only until February 28, 2005.
As reported earlier on peacefulcommunities.ca,
Sue said it would be nice for Green-Up to have its own building
so it could demonstrate green values more easily than in a mall
setting.
"We’re keeping our options open,"
says Sue of possibilities for a future home for the organization.
"After seven different locations over the
past 11 years, it will be nice to find a more permanent home for
Green-Up."
At this stage it is too early to speculate whether
the group will be buying or leasing it’s future office space,
she notes. But Sue says the Green-Up Board of Directors is eager
to explore options.
"We’ve seen a couple of interesting
spaces already and hope that people will keep coming forward with
ideas and offers."
