Ecology Park brings fall
fair to community
Wednesday, September 2004 - Roderick
Benns
The Ecology Park is bringing the traditional fall fair to Peterborough,
to encourage people to connect with nature in a more sustainable
way.
The celebration of harvest time – always
seen as a brief respite between the long labours of summer and
winter’s cold – has always been important to a four-seasons
country like Canada, according to Green-Up. That’s because
it marks one of the last chances to celebrate the earth and it’s
bounty before the snow flies and the winter winds blow.
That’s why Oct. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m., Ecology
Park will be holding both a fall fair and plant sale. While the
autumn plant sale has become a staple for local gardeners, this
year’s event promises to bring some of the tradition of
the fall fair back to the Peterborough area.
"We wanted it to be more of an event,"
explains Ava Richardson, children’s education co-ordinator
for Ecology Park.
"We wanted it to be more appealing to
children and to make it a celebration of fall," she adds.
For many, the fall fair remains a family affair,
where both adults and children get the chance to laugh and learn,
she notes.
Events include face painting, live music, arts and crafts as well
as fresh cider and autumn snacks at the Ecology Park gazebo.
There will be no shortage of learning opportunities
for the adults, too. Workshops on putting a garden to bed, wine
making, herbal wreaths and Tai Chi will be held, as well as a
pie auction.
Autumn is also a preferred time for planting
trees and shrubs, notes Green-Up, as well as for the splitting
of larger perennials, which makes the timing of the plant sale
a perfect one for gardeners of all levels.
