Police remind drivers to
stop for school buses

With another school year underway, the local police department is reminding drivers to keep an eye out for school buses and be prepared to stop.

Peterborough Lakefield Community Police has recently received “numerous” complaints about driver’s disobeying the rules in regards to stopping for school buses, according to a media release. Police are targeting motorists who disobey the rules by following bus routes and zeroing in on specific areas where complaints have been received, notes Sergeant Bob Caister, traffic unit supervisor.

“Usually when school starts and it’s still nice out, kids are full of energy,” he tells peacefulcommunities.ca.

“Motorists have to remember to be extra cautious when around school buses.”

When a school bus’ red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended, “that school bus is about to load or discharge children,” says Sgt. Caister. Drivers headed in both directions are required to stop unless the road is divided by a median. Motorists aren’t permitted to proceed until the lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm retracted.

Sgt. Caister says he thinks people are aware of the rules that pertain to school buses but may try to “beat the bus” when they’re in a hurry. “I don’t think anybody intends to put a child’s life in danger,” Sgt. Caister adds.

Police say, “Vehicles passing stopped school buses which are picking up or dropping off school children creates one of the most hazardous situations a school-aged child can face.”

Failing to stop for a school bus carries a fine of $500 and six demerit points under the Highway Traffic Act.

To report an incident, note the description of the vehicle, its licence plate and location and call the traffic unit at 876-1122.
